Today we celebrate a decisive step towards the future of science and sustainability in Europe
On the morning of Monday 30 June, we attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building that will house the permanent headquarters of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Seville, the only one of its kind in Spain. The event, broadcast live by the Commission itself, was attended by its president, Ursula von der Leyen, who described the project as a ‘symbol of sustainable urban planning’.
HCP Architecture & Engineering is deeply proud to be part of this project as a local architectural firm, in collaboration with BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, creators of the design with whom we won the international competition launched by the European Commission.
Architecture with purpose: sustainability, science and collaboration
This new centre, which will serve more than 400 researchers on the Isla de la Cartuja, has been conceived as a benchmark for responsible and highly efficient architecture. With an eco-efficient design that prioritises the rational use of resources and integration with the environment, the building embodies a common vision: to move towards a more innovative, sustainable and cohesive Europe.
BIG’s proposal, together with the collaboration of HCP as a local partner, and the joint work with Grupo Argenia and the construction consortium led by GRUPO SANJOSE, reflects a collaborative working model that unites technical knowledge, urban sensitivity and commitment to excellence.
A strategic project for Seville and Europe
The new headquarters will not only improve the working conditions of the scientific team, but will also provide an urban, social and economic boost for the city. At HCP, this project resonates deeply with our philosophy: to create spaces that transcend their function and leave a positive mark on people and cities.
This is a clear example of how international collaboration, architectural innovation and a commitment to sustainability can transform a project into an urban landmark. For us, every project counts, and this one will certainly be remembered as a symbol of European progress and cooperation.
We continue to build with principles
The laying of this first stone is not just the beginning of a building, but the consolidation of a shared vision. At HCP we believe that architecture is more than design; it is impact, it is legacy and it is service. That is why we work with rigour, passion and purpose in every project we undertake.
Thanks to all the teams, collaborators and clients who make it possible for us to continue building cities, building futures.
